Former national security adviser John Bolton said on Wednesday he was “embarrassed” that an Iranian military official offered only $300,000 for his assassination.
The Justice Ministry announced on Wednesday that Shahram Poursafi, a member of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), had offered the bounty “likely in retaliation” for the January 2020 killing of Quds Force commander Qasem Soleimani. of the IRGC and a powerful figure in the country.
Bolton served under former President Donald Trump before being sacked in September 2019.
“Well, I was bothered by the low price. I thought it would have been higher,” he joked during an appearance on CNN Wednesday night. “Maybe it was an exchange rate issue or something.”
He went on to say that he had “long had a general understanding of what the threat was”, but was unaware of the details of the plot.
He also indicated he was unaware of any other plot against former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo – who had a much higher $1million bounty for his murder – but said that he was not surprised.
“I think there are a significant number of people who are vulnerable to these Iranian efforts,” he said.
