Veteran prosecutor David Raskin, who recently oversaw the case of an FBI analyst who pleaded guilty to keeping classified documents in his home, has joined the team investigating the documents found at the Mar- a-Lago by former President Donald Trump, the Washington Post reported.

Raskin was previously a senior federal prosecutor in New York, known for his work on the case of a co-conspirator in the September 11 terrorist attacks, as well as the 1998 bombings of US embassies in East Africa. East. Most recently, Raskin served as a prosecutor in Missouri, where he investigated the case of FBI analyst Kendra Kingsbury, who on Oct. 13 pleaded guilty to keeping National Defense documents in her home. Kingsbury faces up to 10 years in federal prison.

His work on such high-profile cases earned Raskin a reputation as one of the nation’s most successful counterterrorism prosecutors, the Post reported. Sources familiar with the Mar-A-Lago investigation told the outlet that Raskin took part in the investigation after he was initially called by the Justice Department to consult on the criminal investigation stemming from the January 6 attack. 2021 against the US Capitol. .

National security law experts told the Post that prosecutors appear to have gathered enough evidence to meet at least some of the criteria for bringing charges against Trump.

Raskin’s involvement in the investigation is an indicator that the case is headed for prosecution, according to several jurists and former U.S. attorneys.

“This decision suggests that the DOJ is seriously considering criminal prosecution,” tweeted Barb McQuade, a former U.S. attorney and professor at Michigan Law School, of the news of Raskin’s involvement. “In light of apparent aggravating factors, it would be difficult to decline to charge this case when ordinary government employees are charged with less egregious conduct.”

Lawyers told Insider in August they believe the former president could soon be charged.

Raskin did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment.
