Republican Rep. Mary Miller of Illinois on Saturday announced that she will run for the House in the newly-drawn 15th Congressional District, choosing to challenge primary incumbent GOP Rep. Rodney Davis with the backing of the most prominent Republican in the country — former President Donald Trump.
In the aftermath of the 2020 Census, Illinois lost a congressional seat — and with Democrats in control of the Governor’s Mansion and the state legislature — lawmakers chose to divide Miller’s district between neighboring districts in the redistricting process.
Miller, who was elected first to Congress in November 2020 is opting to run in Davis’ district rather than challenging Republican Rep. Mike Bost for the new 12th Congressional District.
Bost and Davis both have solid Republican credentials. Miller however, who is part of the ultraconservative Freedom Caucus has pledged that she will run her campaign as an ally of Trump.
CNN reports that Marjorie Taylor Greene (a controversial Georgia Rep.) encouraged Donald Trump to support Miller’s campaign despite Kevin McCarthy’s pleas to the former president to stay out.
She tweeted, “I am blessed by President Donald Trump’s endorsement to my reelection in IL-15,” on Saturday. “I pledge to always fight for the America First Agenda. This year will be the year we get our country back.
Miller’s support for his agenda was praised by the former President in a statement.
“Congresswoman Mary Miller does a great job representing the people in Illinois!” Mary is a strong supporter of America First’s agenda, including the Second Amendment and Election Security. She fights hard against Joe Biden’s open borders, runaway inflation, and the radical indoctrination of our children,” he said. “Mary has received my complete and total endorsement!”
The Republican Party is the dominant party in the 15th District. Therefore, the winner of the primary will be the favorite to win the district in the general elections.
Democrats have been trying for Miller’s defeat for some time now, especially after Miller’s comments at the January 2021 Save the Republic rally, which seemed to praise Adolf Hitler, the Nazi leader and dictator of Germany.
She said that each generation has the responsibility of teaching and training the next generation. “You know, even if we win a few election, we will still lose unless we win over the hearts and minds our children.” This is the battle.
She said that Hitler was correct in one thing: He said that “Whoever has the youth, will have the future.” Our children are being propagandized.”
Miller initially reacted to the outrage over her comments but later reaffirmed her support for Israel.
In a statement, she said, “I sincerely regret any harm my words caused” and regretted using a reference about one of the most evil dictators history to illustrate the dangers that other influences can have upon our youth. “While some are trying deliberately to make my words seem antithetical to what I believe, let me be very clear: I am passionately pro-Israeli and I will always be an ally and advocate for the Jewish community.”
During Trump’s time at the White House, Davis was a supporter of Trump’s legislative agenda.
The congressman voted in favor of the January 6 investigation into the Capitol riot.
If Davis wins his primary, and Republicans regain control of the House in fall, he would be ready to lead the House Administration Committee.
