Lawyers for former President Donald Trump uncovered more classified documents in January and turned them over to federal investigators, according to multiple reports.
Among the documents handed over were papers with classified marks, an empty folder with classified marks and the laptop of one of Trump’s aides, multiple news outlets reported.
The classified documents were discovered at Mar-a-Lago, but not in the area where Trump stored the batch of documents seized during the search of his home in August by FBI agents, ABC News reported.
Sources told ABC News that James Trusty, Trump’s attorney, told federal investigators that classified documents had been electronically copied to the aide’s laptop. The assistant apparently did not know he had scanned classified documents on his laptop, sources told CNN.
ABC News was first to report news of the additional documents being handed over on Friday.
Trump is being investigated by Jack Smith, the DOJ’s special counsel, after hundreds of documents were discovered at Trump’s home in Mar-a-Lago after he left office in 2021. Smith reportedly subpoenaed former Vice President Mike Pence, though sources told The New York Times it was for his investigation into Trump’s role in the Jan. 6, 2021, uprising.
Classified documents were also found in the homes of Pence and President Joe Biden, and the DOJ is looking into their cases.
A lawyer for Trump did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment.
